Walking into almost any food store in Taiwan, and you’re bound to see whole shelves dedicated to instant noodles. This is a scene repeated across Asia and beyond, as this simple and tasty snack has conquered the world!

Around 85 billion servings of instant noodles are slurped down worldwide every year. Considering its relatively small population, Taiwan is fairly high up on the consumption list at number 12. Instant noodles were actually invented by a Taiwan-born Japanese, Momofuku Ando, in 1950s Japan. He also founded Nissin Foods, which is still among the biggest instant noodle producers today. In fact, the Japanese are so proud of instant noodles’ origin in their country that they voted the snack the top Japanese invention of the 20th century!

Some say that if you eat instant noodles too often you will become a mummy, because they contain so many preservatives. This concern is unfounded though, as being dehydrated, the noodles are safe from bacteria and, therefore, have no need for preservatives. Though instant noodles can be quite salty and fatty, you can make the meal healthier by only using half of the flavoring pack and adding fresh ingredients.

Recently in Taiwan and Japan, some shops have even opened up which sell and cook instant noodles for you on the spot. It appears the instant noodle craze can only keep on growing!
