It’s not the sound of a passing truck. You don’t live near the airport, so it’s not a plane taking off, either. And though it may sound like a pig with a nasty cold, you know that’s impossible. So, what is that strange grunting, choking noise? It’s your dad. He’s asleep in the next room, and he’s snoring. ___1___ Since 30 to 50 percent of people in the world make noises like this when they sleep, chances are that you’ve been disturbed by a snorer in the past.
___2___ A blocked air passage can be the result of a number of things, including alcohol, allergies, a poor diet, and cold medication.
Everyone knows how hard it is to get to sleep when someone’s snoring loudly, but those responsible for the noise may also suffer themselves. ___3___
Treating the condition requires ensuring the throat doesn’t become obstructed. ___4___ For more serious cases, surgery may be an option. The most common procedure aims to widen the throat by cutting away excess tissue. ___5___
So, for snorers not willing to risk an even louder snore, perhaps it’s better to invest in an anti-snoring pillow, sleep on your side, and buy your loved ones some ear plugs!

(A) Many snorers have trouble sleeping through the night and, as a result, can often be irritable, sleepy, and inattentive during the day.
(B) While surgery like this can be effective, the resulting scarring sometimes makes people’s snoring problems even worse.
(C) One of the things we often do to stop a person from snoring is to wake them up, although it seems to be of little use.
(D) The science of snoring is simple: if the movement of air during breathing gets obstructed, your throat starts to vibrate and make a noise.
(E) Sleeping on your side, therefore, can have positive results because it stops the tongue from blocking the passage of air as you breathe.
(F) With noise levels reaching 120 decibels – as loud as a jet plane – snoring is often irritating and sometimes very damaging.
