Imagine your ship has sunk yet, by some miracle, you manage to swim to land. You’re filled with gratitude at the feeling of sand beneath your feet but, too exhausted to explore, you drop to the ground and fall into a deep slumber.
Hours later, you blink your eyes open and try to get up. But you can’t move. Your arms and legs have been fastened to the ground. Suddenly, you are aware of something moving on your chest. You can only roar with surprise when you see “a human creature not six inches high, with a bow and arrow in his hands” looking at you. So begin the tales of Lemuel Gulliver.
Captured by these tiny folk, Gulliver refrains from using violence against them, though he is sure he could destroy them easily. He is in the miniature kingdom of Lilliput, where horses are just five inches high and the tallest tree can be chopped down with his penknife. After being taken to the city where he makes the acquaintance of the emperor, Gulliver wins the trust of the Lilliputians. They are hospitable to him, in spite of the fact that he needs to eat more than 1,000 times the food of a single native. In return, Gulliver helps the inhabitants in their war against neighboring Blefuscu; the nations are in dispute over which is the proper way to crack an egg.
Gulliver sees the Lilliputians as overly obsessed with trivial things, with an inflated view of their own worth and strength. Conversely, they believe they are normal, and consider their guest a freak of nature. Eventually, things turn sour, and Gulliver leaves Lilliput and returns home to England.

Gulliver’s travels resume just two months later, when our hero takes to the seas again. After a fierce storm, Gulliver and some crewmates row ashore in search of fresh water. He wanders off, curiously making his observations, when he notices his shipmates returning to the boat. Stranded and alone once more, Gulliver finds himself marooned on Brobdingnag.
Quite the opposite to the inhabitants of Lilliput, the people of Brobdingnag are some 72 feet tall! He is discovered by a farmer and taken to a house, where everything is so great in size that Gulliver is quite frightened. In a reversal of roles, Gulliver is now as small to the natives as the Lilliputians were to him. Furthermore, these peaceful giants are not impressed by war or by Gulliver’s tales of battles in Europe. As Gulliver sniffed at the Lilliputians fighting a war over the way to crack an egg, so the Brobdingnag king dismisses Gulliver’s England as petty and incomprehensibly violent. Gulliver is later snatched by a giant eagle and dropped into the ocean, from where he is rescued and returned to his wife and family.
With such a thirst for travel, it’s not long before Gulliver embarks on his third voyage. Left marooned after his ship is attacked by pirates, Gulliver stumbles upon the floating island of Laputa. Laputan people are enamored with abstract theories, and prove to be a very impractical race. The scientists carry out useless experiments; nothing they do seems to have a purpose. Meanwhile, as the government focuses on these academics, it remains completely out of touch with the concerns of normal Laputans. When Gulliver finally returns home, he swears his traveling days are over.

After five months, Gulliver again gets itchy feet and begins another voyage. After a mutiny, he is put to sea on a raft. He runs aground on a new land where the humans, who are disfigured and coarse, live alongside the superior Houyhnhnms – a species of horse so intelligent, moral, and logical that Gulliver becomes quite taken with them.
First, though, Gulliver encounters the human species, known as Yahoos, describing them as the most “disagreeable …. animal” he has seen in all his travels. He then bumps into two Houyhnhnms who recognize him to be a Yahoo, but seem impressed by his superior intellect. They take him in, and Gulliver lives alongside them, soaking up their knowledge and growing evermore disenchanted with the Yahoos and the humans back home. But Gulliver cannot stay. The Houyhnhnms request that he leave. Gulliver is heartbroken.
Reluctantly, he returns home. Repulsed at the thought of being once more among Yahoos, including his wife and children, Gulliver chooses a solitary life. As his sanity diminishes, his only company is two horses he has bought. He says, “My horses understand me tolerably well; I converse with them at least four hours every day.” Though Houyhnhnm society cannot accept Gulliver, he will continue to idealize that species forever.
Gulliver’s Travels was published in 1726. Through these tall tales the author, Jonathan Swift, successfully satirizes European and British society of the time, while being both funny and questioning. Government and politics are ridiculed, and immoral behaviors are challenged. Above all, Gulliver’s Travels is a great story of mythical lands, a celebration of imaginative fiction, and a joy to read.
