It has the largest circulation of any commercial magazine in the world. ___1___ And it even fits conveniently into your pocket.
Reader’s Digest is one of the great literary success stories of the 20th century. ___2___ Wallace’s hospitalization left him a lot of time to read, and he noticed that there wasn’t a single magazine that provided articles about the diverse range of topics he was interested in. Thus, the idea for Reader’s Digest was born.
Wallace created his first issue of the magazine in 1922 by selecting articles that he liked from other publications. ___3___ He also decided that the issue should have 31 stories, so that customers could enjoy a different one every day.
Wallace’s magazine was rejected by every publisher he presented it to, but he pushed forward and printed the magazine himself. ___4___ The magazine emphasized traditional American values, such as faith and hard work. Its popularity continued to grow yearly, filling a niche in the nation’s culture. For many, the magazine’s plain-spoken earnestness has defined the American experience over the past half-century.
___5___ After 80 years in print, Reader’s Digest still provides readers with easy-to-read, inspiring articles.
