Andrea Bocelli’s eyebrows dance as he tilts his head in a gentle nod while singing. The expression on his bearded face is as open as a child’s with the hint of a smile.

When Bocelli sings, he usually keeps his eyes closed. He does this not only because he is lost in the music, but also because he is blind. As an infant, he was diagnosed with glaucoma. While he was hospitalized for one of many operations on his eyes, the man in the next room played classical music at all hours. The music soothed him and stopped him from crying when nothing else could. “Music for me is a necessity,” he wrote when he was little, “I listen to it, I follow it, I find it, I court it, I adore it, it is my life.”

Bocelli’s childhood was filled with warmth and liveliness from his family. This atmosphere nurtured in him a zest for life and a perpetually positive outlook on things. His family’s support helped him accept that he would lose his sight. He took his blindness as an unavoidable fate and kept pursuing his dream.

Bocelli’s parents noticed his love for music and bought him xylophones, tambourines, and a record player. Meanwhile, Bocelli’s uncle introduced him to the music of several renowned Italian singers. Bocelli devoured opera recordings on his record player and fell hopelessly in love with opera. He dreamed of becoming a great tenor one day.

Bocelli initially followed a practical path and became an attorney. He gave it up after a year, however, because he could not abandon his dreams of becoming a professional singer. His childhood fascination with music had turned into a burning adult ambition.

To follow his dream, Bocelli studied diligently under the renowned tenor Franco Corelli and performed in piano bars nightly to make ends meet. He got his big break after he recorded a demo of the duet Miserere. His fame and popularity increased after a live performance at Pavarotti’s annual charity concert. The audience instantly fell in love with Bocelli.

One of the reasons why people of all musical tastes love Bocelli is his diversity. He shines just as brightly in crossing over from opera to pop. His international breakthrough came with the pop hit Time to Say Goodbye, which he performed with Sara Brightman. He has also recorded duets with pop singer Celine Dion.

Bocelli expresses his life experiences and his reluctance to give up through his voice. He does not let his blindness stop him from living his life to the fullest. He takes time to read literature and philosophy to fill his soul with inspiration. Exciting hobbies such as skiing, horseback riding, and even skydiving also help to enrich his life. To Bocelli, blindness is not a tragedy, as he quoted from The Little Prince, “You see clearly only through your heart. The essential is invisible to the eye.”
