A black scorpion slowly marches forward as an eagle soars overhead. The scorpion symbolizes impending disaster, while the eagle represents hope. All the while, a chilling and beautiful melody plays in the background. Images of pollution, violence, and war flash onscreen before a guitar riff cuts through like a knife, stripping away the images and showing us nu-metal rockers Linkin Park.

This scene from their new video What I’ve Done sets the tone for Linkin Park’s highly anticipated third studio album, Minutes to Midnight. Yet success did not always come easy for Linkin Park. The band formed in 1996. The original members were high school friends who decided to try music as a career. But tensions mounted as the band failed to land a record deal.

Issues such as poverty, war and global warming are themes which Linkin Park feel strongly about. The depth of the material is conveyed through lead singer Chester Bennington’s intense vocals. While staying true to their solid sound of fusion metal mixed with hip-hop beats, they have used an array of instruments, from banjos to vintage guitars. Midnight promises to give fans and first-time listeners something a little different.
