Ferns are one of the oldest types of plants in the world, ___3___ back at least 400 million years. During the Carboniferous Period, when most of the world’s coal was formed, the Earth was dominated by ferns. Traditionally, ferns were overlooked by gardeners ___6___ flowers or fruit trees, but a new generation is learning to appreciate these plants.
