Cancun Climate Meeting
A UN meeting in Cancun, Mexico in December 2010 resulted in a landmark deal which should help to curb climate change. And it couldn’t come at a better time, as 2010 turned out to be one of the hottest years on record. Many believe the recent temperature surge is due in large part to global warming, caused by excessive use of fossil fuels. At the Cancun meeting, nations came to a consensus that carbon emissions would need to be reduced worldwide. As part of the agreement, a Green Climate Fund was established which will channel money from industrialized to developing nations. The aid will allow poor countries to grow their economies without cutting down their forests and creating more pollution. The deal reached in Cancun certainly represents a very significant step forward for cleaning up our planet. However, many environmental activists claim that there is still a lot of work to be done.
Taiwan Takes Home the Gold in Science Competition
In December 2010, Taiwan took home top honors at the International Junior Science Olympiad (IJSO) in Nigeria, besting 34 other nations. The IJSO evaluates students, aged 15 and under, on their knowledge of chemistry, physics, biology, earth science, and mathematics. Aside from being selected as the best team, Taiwanese students also excelled on an individual level. Huang Kai-chi, a freshman at Taipei Municipal Jianguo High School, was selected as the “overall winner” of the event and also won a gold medal in the category of “best theory.” The aim of the IJSO is to honor students with an aptitude for science and to encourage them to continue their studies in college. Taiwan has been taking part in the competition since 2004, and in total, it has taken home 35 gold medals, seven silver medals, and one bronze medal.
