Tadao Ando is a Japanese architect who was born in Osaka in 1941. Brought up by his grandmother, Ando was a boxer and a truck driver in his younger years before embarking on his career as an architect. He was inspired by the post-war rebuilding of Osaka that was taking place all around him. Without formal training, Ando taught himself about architecture by studying designs and visiting sites and reading about them. He then furthered his knowledge through his travels to the U.S., Europe, and Africa, before returning to Osaka and setting up Tadao Ando Architecture & Associates in 1969.
Ando’s works are characteristically simple, and he uses concrete as his main material. His buildings are designed to complement the landscape, and they often feature special outdoor areas. Natural light plays an important role in his creations, and Ando is driven by a desire to create urban places where people can contemplate and reflect. For Ando, incorporating the elements of light, wind, and the sea into his work is vital.
An early example of Ando’s emerging style is the 1976 Row House in Sumiyoshi. The small, two-story concrete house consists of two interior spaces and one open exterior courtyard. From the street, the house is a simple windowless block that fits perfectly into a space on a narrow street. The light inside is provided by the courtyard, which also serves to connect the manmade concrete with air, light, and rain.

A larger example of Ando’s architectural style is situated on the side of the Rokko Mountains, in Kobe. The residential complex is an intricate network of homes separated by cleverly created gaps that open up the spaces between each house, filling the spaces with light. Rokko Housing One was completed in 1983 and withstood the Great Hanshin Earthquake of 1995. The design brought the architect to the attention of the international community.
The architect has also won praise for his remarkable religious buildings. He has designed four churches in Japan, all of which follow the theme of nature: Church on the Water, Church of the Light, Church of the Wind, and Water Temple. Church of the Light is one of Ando’s most beautiful and least complex works. The main feature of the box-shaped building is the far wall, which is sliced horizontally and vertically to form the shape of a cross. Through these gaps, light floods into the church.
Ando won the most distinguished award in the field of architecture, the Pritzker Prize, in 1995. He donated his US$100,000 winnings to an orphanage. More recently, Ando has undertaken to design his fifth church – and his first overseas – which will be built in Taiwan. Church of the Earth will be built in Aodi on the northeast coast, and is scheduled to be completed in April, 2011. Church of the Earth will represent a solemn spirit, and it is hoped Ando’s building will breathe new life into architecture in Taiwan.
