If you just associate flowers with romantic gestures or scenic surroundings, think again. In the evolutionary fight for survival, some plants have had to adapt in weird and wonderful ways, sometimes with ugly and smelly results!

The Rafflesia arnoldii, or the striking corpse lily, is found lurking on the humid rainforest floors of Indonesia and Malaysia. With white dots sprinkled over a ruby background, it’s dressed like a fairy-tale toadstool and certainly could be mistaken for a weird forest fungus. It’s only in full bloom for one week of the year – but what a “bloom” that is! Measuring up to a meter in diameter and weighing as much as 11 kilograms, the corpse lily is the largest individual flower on Earth. This enormous species gives offfoul smell, like decaying meat, to attract beetles and flies which enable the planet’s pollination.

Titan arum is another freakishly large flower, known to reach heights of over three meters. It also emits a revolting fragrance, which can shift from rotting pumpkin to month-old fish and can be sniffed from half a mile away. As is the case with the Rafflesia, the stink is an evolutionary tactic designed to tempt flies and beetles for pollination. Mercifully, though, the bloom is even more infrequent – just two days every one to three years.

On a much smaller scale, we have the Hydnora Africana, though it won’t win any beauty contests with its extraterrestrial looks. However, if you can get over the dung-like odor of the blossom and take a bite of the edible fruit, you should find it’s surprisingly sweet. It is said to also have medicinal benefits.

Super-smelliness is not the only unexpected trait in the plant kingdom. The Venus flytrap is a deadly predator – to insects, at least! These deceptive plants have developed the ability to lure insects and spiders with a sweet-smelling sap. The unsuspecting insect lands on the flytrap, touching special hairs that signal for the trap to snap quickly shut. The captured prey is helpless as the plant sets about digesting its living meal.

In a similar vein is the alluring pitcher plant, which possesses dangling jug-like parts that are slippery on the inside, making escape impossible, and filled with a fluid that drowns any unfortunate little creature that dares venture in. This exotic plant is as untrustworthy as the Venus flytrap, but it’s not just mini meals that interest the pitcher plant. Researchers in the Philippines found specimens so large that they can trap and digest rats, reminding us that beauty really is only skin deep!

Less gruesome are the hardy baobab trees, some of which are thought to reach 2,000 years in age. These strangely shaped trees are capable of storing up to 120,000 liters of water, and so they are an essential resource for wandering nomads and local wildlife. At the other end of the botanical spectrum, the resurrection fern can survive without water until the brink of death, shrinking up as if lifeless. Just the tiniest drop of water is enough for the fern to burst forth again into all its former glory.

In the diversity of nature, we can find everything, from the majestic to the monstrous. Though we may respect the ancient baobab, we might be thankful there are no stinking corpse lilies in our gardens!
