On October 8th, Taipei Arena will play host to towering giants of the sporting world. The Denver Nuggets, featuring the dynamic and offensively creative superstars Carmelo Anthony and Chauncey Billups, and Danny Granger’s Indiana Pacers, will tip off to commence the NBA’s first ever preseason game in Taiwan. The Nuggets and Pacers cheerleaders, mascots, and even the court itself will all be flown over specifically for the match, making for an entirely authentic NBA experience. It will surely be an unforgettable evening of alley-oops, slam dunks, fade-away jumpers, and the brand of fast-paced, all-out action the NBA is known for.

Given the excitement an NBA game generates, it’s no wonder the league enjoys such immense popularity around the world. But it’s not just the game itself that attracts legions of fans. There’s also some savvy marketing involved. In order to build its overseas fan base, the league has shrewdly scheduled, to date, 93 games in 16 countries and territories outside North America. While other major North American sports leagues focus chiefly on the domestic markets, the NBA is working to turn itself into a truly global brand.

Another reason why the NBA is so popular is that the league gives back to the communities around the globe that support it. Since 2005, NBA Cares, the charitable wing of the NBA, has raised over $105 million for various charities. The league has also introduced NBA Green to advocate environmentally friendly activities, and NBA Fit, a program designed to help people get fit and healthy.

What truly brought the NBA to its dominant spot in the sports world is its many memorable superstars. One of the NBA’s first larger-than-life characters was Wilt Chamberlain. Standing just over seven feet tall, he once racked up an unthinkable 100 points against the New York Knicks. During the 1961-62 season, he averaged 50.4 points and 25.7 rebounds per game – stats that no one has come close to matching since.
