If someone told you that he had combined DNA with a computer, you would probably think he was going nuts. But not so fast! You might be guilty of not knowing the facts. ___1___ The potential of this new science is certain to astonish you.

___2___ Think of it as binary computer code, which uses just two symbols (0 and 1) to write out instructions that computers follow. In DNA molecules, nucleotide bases act just like those zeroes and ones. ___3___ If you can decide how biological molecules interact, or in other words, if you can change their code, you can control what they do. The molecules become like tiny computers that spring into action at the right moment.

These molecules already speak the “language” of living cells. ___4___ In theory, scientists could design molecules that are able to combat a blood clot, or a tumor. These made-to-order molecules could revolutionize how we treat certain illnesses. A molecular computer might act as a “doctor” within a cell. ___5___ In the future, doctors could be prescribing computers instead of pills!

A.   Change their sequence, and the DNA molecule will perform an entirely different function.

B.   DNA nanotechnology involves engineering molecules and making them perform specific tasks right inside our bodies.

C.   Today, the two worlds of computer technology and DNA research are coming together to create the field of DNA nanotechnology.

D.  If we were to be infected with a disease, it would detect it and take action against it.

E.   They could easily integrate into our bodies’ system, in a way that no other artificial creation could.
