You have just arrived in an unfamiliar city, and you want to see the sights. The problem is you haven’t done any research in advance. Luckily, you have your trusty smartphone with you. Pulling it out of your pocket, you start up an ___1___ and point the phone at the street in front of you. On the image of the street, information bubbles pop up on the screen, ___2___ you where to find good restaurants, interesting museums, and other tourist attractions on that very street. This is just one example of how augmented reality can make our everyday lives easier.

Augmented-reality programs simply take a live view of a real environment, and augment that reality with sound or graphics using sensory input technology. ___3___, these programs sense where you are, and then perform various functions to help you out with whatever you need. One augmented-reality program, Aurasma, can magically replace still images ___4___ related videos. For example, a movie poster might become the film’s trailer on your smartphone screen. ___5___, Word Lens, reads text that is visible in a camera phone’s lens, and switches the text in the image with a translation.

Augmented reality will even be in our cars soon. Two different companies have already unveiled programs that will display information and even give drivers directions on a car’s windshield ___6___ they drive around.
