For most people, trash floating in the ocean is considered pollution. But WHIM Architecture, a company based in the Netherlands, is turning this idea on its head. They are laying down plans to build an island from 44,000 tons of trash. The project, which has aptly been dubbed Recycled Island, could accommodate up to half a million people. Upon completion, it would be a fully sustainable, self-sufficient island that’s roughly the size of Hawaii.
WHIM has three vital goals for Recycled Island. Their primary motivation is to find a use for the enormous amount of plastic waste that is polluting our oceans. Secondly, they want to create new land for future generations to live on. And, last but not least, they want to construct a sustainable habitat which will set a precedent for others to follow. The proposed location for Recycled Island is the heart of the Pacific Ocean, between Hawaii and San Francisco. This area was strategically chosen because the Pacific currently has the largest concentration of plastic waste. This would also keep transportation costs for materials at a minimum.
On Recycled Island, visitors and inhabitants will find everything that a regular island has, including beaches, residential housing, land for agriculture, and plenty of tourist activities. Although many people may consider Recycled Island to be little more than a pipe dream, its founders disagree. As the world moves towards a greener future, it seems like a logical step in the right direction for our planet.
