If you tell most artists that their work is a load of rubbish, they will likely take offense. But if you say that to HA Schult, he may thank you for the compliment. ___1___ His artistic motto is, “We produce trash, are born from trash, and will turn back into trash.”
In 1996, Schult hatched the idea to build an army of 1,000 life-size trash people. It would take over six months to complete the task, and Schult required the help of 30 assistants. ___2___ When the figures were completed, Schult marched his Trash People to many far-off places including the Great Wall of China, Moscow’s Red Square, the Great Pyramid, and even Antarctica. ___3___
For his latest project, Schult has constructed two hotels, one in Rome and the other in Madrid, which are made from debris that washed up on beaches. ___4___ His Beach Garbage Hotel in Madrid has only five rooms, which are decorated with ripped Persian carpet pieces, old socks, and rusted musical instruments. ___5___
