With their cheeks bulging, twenty competitors quickly stuffed whole hot dogs into their mouths between gulps of water. Thousands of fans cheered as Joey Chestnut wolfed down 66 hot dogs in 12 minutes. A new world champion was crowned, and a world record set. This was the thrilling scene last July at Nathan’s International Hot Dog Eating Contest.
Legend says that this contest originated on Independence Day in 1916 when four immigrants quarreled over which one of them was the most patriotic. They settled their argument by seeing who could eat the most hot dogs. Since then, the contest has grown to become an important Independence Day tradition.
Every July 4th, participants from all over the globe gather on Coney Island, New York City to see who will become the new champion. Before the contest starts, the crowd gets excited by singing hot dog songs such as “Hot Dog Time!” or “Hot Dogs, Hot Dogs.” For the contestants, the first place cash prize of $10,000 is nothing compared with the honor of winning the prestigious jewel-covered Nathan’s Mustard Belt. This year, watch and see which dog will have his day!
