Passing under the entrance archway, you hear the thundering roar of merrymakers. Jolly men in leather shorts stroll by, arms locked with pretty women wearing traditional dresses of German farmers. Children skip around to lively folk music with large pretzels in their hands. This is Oktoberfest, the world-famous beer festival that draws more than six million visitors every year.
Held in Munich, Germany, Oktoberfest is a sixteen-day fair in September and October. The first Oktoberfest was held in 1810 to celebrate the wedding of the crown prince of Bavaria. It became an annual event and its popularity increased. Soon the small food and beer stands grew into large beer tents. Today, fourteen beer tents on the fairground serve delicious food and special beers brewed darker and richer for the occasion.
On the first day of the festival, around 100,000 people crowd the fairground as the mayor of Munich enters the 140-year-old Schottenhamel tent. To the roaring cheers of the visitors, he uses a large mallet to hammer the first tap into the first keg of beer. After a couple of strong blows, he shouts, “It’s tapped!” and the celebration officially begins.

After the drinks have begun flowing, guests choose a tent to visit. The tents sell a variety of delicious dishes, from suckling pig in beer sauce to grilled fish on a stick.
The Armbrustschutzen tent is one of the largest, and holds around 7,400 patrons. On stage, a band belts out marches and lively Bavarian folk songs. Home-style German dishes like pork knuckle and German sausage are favorites on the menu. This tent even hosts a crossbow shooting competition.
In contrast, the Hippodrom is one of the smallest tents, but its relaxed atmosphere makes it worth a visit. The ceiling is covered with richly dyed colorful cloth, and beautifully decorated statues of white horses are placed throughout this hundred-year-old tent. Until recently, diners could ride real horses around the tent, but that was stopped for the guests’ safety.
After visitors have finished feasting, they can take a ride on a roller coaster or Ferris wheel. From atop these attractions, the entire festival is visible in all its glory. Good drinks, good food and good times are all waiting for you at Oktoberfest. When you arrive, make sure to stay “Cheers,” or as the Germans say, “Prost!”
