Groundhog Day is a colorful, offbeat tradition celebrated annually in the U.S. and Canada. As legend has it, every February 2nd a drowsy groundhog emerges from his hole after a ___1___ winter’s sleep. If the furry rodent spots his shadow, he’ll retreat into his burrow and return to hibernation, signifying that winter will last for ___2___ six weeks. But, if he doesn’t catch a glimpse of it, this means winter is subsiding and spring is on its way.

Groundhog Day is supposedly derived from Candlemas Day, an age-old holiday which German settlers brought to Pennsylvania, USA in the 1700s. So, it’s only fitting that the largest Groundhog Day celebration ___3___ in that state in the town of Punxsutawney. Crowds of up to 30,000 people gather, enjoying food and music as they await a prediction from a special guest.
