Imagine a world in which, instead of raining metaphorical “cats and dogs,” it rained actual carrots and hot dogs, among all kinds of other food. Well, this is what happens in the delightfully bizarre story Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs.

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs was first served up in picture book form in 1978, written by Judi Barrett and illustrated by her husband Ron. It has remained a firm favorite in the world of children’s literature ever since, having sold over three million copies.

The story begins with an everyday family breakfast, at which Grandpa accidentally flips a pancake onto his grandson Henry’s head. That evening, the incident prompts Grandpa to tell Henry and his sister a bedtime story about a fantastical town named Chewandswallow. Here, there’s no need for grocery stores because, at mealtime, food falls down from the sky. This arrangement suits everyone fine, until the “weather” takes a turn for the worse, with violent storms depositing giant servings. Massive meatballs damage houses, and the local school gets flattened by a huge pancake. To escape more food-related disasters, Chewandswallow’s residents finally decide to sail away to a new town on rafts made of sandwiches.

Part of the book’s charm is the way it differentiates between the mundane real world, sketched in black and white, and the imaginary one, depicted in color. At the end, however, these worlds overlap as the final illustration depicts a yellow sun rising over a white snowy hill. Inspired by Grandpa’s story, the two children are visualizing the scene as a giant serving of mashed potatoes with butter on top!

This month, a “mouth-watering” 3-D movie adaptation of Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs is forecast to land in Taiwan, fresh from topping the U.S. box office. While the picture book could be considered an appetizer, the movie is the main course and dessert! Not only is the origin of the mysterious raining food explained in the movie, but there is also a host of wacky new characters to enjoy.
《食破天惊》3-D电影预计将在本月席卷台湾，这部令人「垂涎欲滴」的改编作品才刚横扫全美票房。如果把绘本喻为开胃菜，那电影就是主菜跟甜点啰！电影不仅解释了食物从天降之谜的缘由，还加入了一大群滑稽好笑的新角色。
The story centers on Flint Lockwood, a young inventor whose crazy creations invariably end up creating chaos. Among other things, his weirdly active brain has previously given rise to a monkey-thought translator, spray-on shoes, and a hair “unbalder” that causes hair to grow all over a man’s face. Then, when his town faces severe food shortage, he manages to invent a miraculous machine that can convert water into food. As it rains hamburgers and snows ice cream, it appears that Flint has saved the day. Predictably, however, his bright idea gets out of control yet again, and an awesome food storm threatens first the town, and then the whole planet!

As well as being a fitting tribute to the original picture book, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs is a hilariously effective parody of the disaster movie genre. Compared to films like The Day After Tomorrow and 2012, it certainly promises an extra-large portion of laughs, not to mention eye-popping visuals. As the movie’s trailer proclaims, “If you have a hunger for excitement and an appetite for adventure, prepare to get served!”
