Winnie-the-Pooh was actually a real teddy bear owned by the real Christopher Robin, whose full name was Christopher Robin Milne. The son of author A.A. Milne, Christopher got his unusual name for his bear while on a visit to the London Zoo, where he saw Winne, a Canadian black bear. Pooh was the name of a swan he had seen while on holiday, and he combined the two names when naming his beloved bear, which is now on display at the New York Public Library.
In 1926, A.A. Milne published the first book about Christopher’s bear, Winnie-the-Pooh, which was followed by The House at Pooh Corner in 1928. Christopher’s other toys, such as Piglet, Eeyore, and overly energetic Tigger also made their way into these stories. The tales are set in Ashdown Forest, a real place in Sussex, England, where Milne had a country home nearby. But in the books, the forest was given the name “Hundred Acre Wood.”
In 1961, Disney was granted rights to the Winnie-the-Pooh stories, and made many cartoons and movies featuring Milne’s characters. To learn more about Pooh and his friends, check out Milne’s classic books and the Disney films that have brought timeless wisdom to generations.
