Jay Chou

Cofounder – JVR Music

Once a behind-the-scenes guy who penned songs for other musicians and subsisted on instant ramen, Jay Chou has parlayed his wild success as a singer-songwriter – he reportedly made $17.5 million last year – into other ventures. His debut as a movie director, the 2007 film Secret, was an instant hit. Last year, the 31-year-old launched a dessert shop filled with Chou memorabilia; directed his first television series; and made his first foray into Hollywood, playing Kato in Michel Gondry’s Green Hornet, set to release in December. This year, he says, will be devoted to music; his latest album debuted in May.

Stacey Simmons

Founder – Omnicademy

Think of Omnicademy as a semester abroad minus the travel. College students use the web portal – tricked out with massive multiplayer classrooms, virtual-learning “quests,” and social networking – to enroll in online courses at other universities and earn credit at their own school. “I started developing tools that would take the best part of the classroom and the best part of the Internet,” says Stacey Simmons, who paired the software with backend support for participating teachers, such as online assistants. Of the current education model, Simmons, 40, says, “I like horses, but I wouldn’t ride a horse to work. It’s time to drive a car.” Omnicademy comes out of beta this fall semester, engine revving.

Amy Pascal

Cochair – Sony Pictures

Sony quietly racked up a banner year, thanks to Amy Pascal. The 52-year-old Californian green-lighted films – including 2012 and Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs – that last year returned $3.5 billion at the global box office, a new studio record. One prescient example: Pascal jumped on Michael Jackson’s raw rehearsal footage shortly after his death last year, and turned a $60 million bet into $260 million in box-office receipts. Her next task may prove even riskier – planning the new installment of Spider-Man, Sony’s biggest franchise, without director Sam Raimi or star Tobey Maguire.

Jamie Oliver

Chef  主厨

Here’s one big, fat challenge: get Americans to eat right. Millions of people tuned in ABC’s six-episode Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution to watch the Naked Chef attempt this task, beginning with the nutritionally broken school-lunch system in Huntington, West Virginia. (A similar effort by Oliver has produced significant changes in Britain.) It wasn’t hard for him to see where to start – “Take vegetables,” he says. “French fries count as a vegetables?!” – though it was just a start. Fortunately, Oliver, 35, has patience. He has launched a nationwide petition to press public officials for reform, and he opened Jamie’s Kitchen, a community center offering cooking classes and food education in downtown Huntington. He also has the high profile that a global empire brings. In addition to his TV series, cookbooks, restaurants, and a bimonthly magazine, he has branded cookware, ingredients, home fragrances, and bath and body products. Through the Jamie Oliver Foundation, he provides opportunities to disadvantaged youth, including apprenticeship at his high-end restaurant franchise Fifteen. “I want to find a way to empower other people through food,” he says. “I was rubbish in school and have serious dyslexia. I can still barely read. Cooking was the only thing I was ever good at.”

Jonney Shih

Chairman – ASUSTeck

“One day,” says Jonney Shih, 58, “I had a feeling that we should just directly make the computer into a keyboard.” The result: the Eee keyboard, which uses a TV as a monitor. Shih’s vision – that “everything has to be from the end users’ life-experience point of view” – has transformed the Taiwan-based motherboard maker into an emerging computer colossus. The lightweight low-cost ASUS Eee PC is credited with being the first netbook for the masses. This year, Shih will take on Apple with not one but two new tablet PCs.

Samuel Stupp

Director, Institute for Bio Nanotechnology in Medicine – Northwestern University (Illinois)

Back in the90s, when regenerative medicine was more sci-fi than reality, materials scientist Samuel Stupp had a big idea. He knew that damaged body tissue lost its ability to knit itself back together with natural biological fibers when the damage was too extensive. What if he could deploy an army of self-assembling molecules to restore the body’s self-repairing powers to reverse spinal cord injuries or Alzheimer’s? Since that eureka moment, Stupp, 49, has brought his vision to life. One of his many successes: making paralyzed mice walk again by injecting them with a liquid containing nanomolecules that assemble into fibers and attract new nerve cells. Stupp thinks his nanofiber approach will become the centerpiece of regenerative medicine. “We have covered the broadest range of conditions – heart disease, diabetes, Parkinson’s – with a single platform,” he says. “That’s what makes it special.”

Chris Anderson 安德森

Curator – TED Conferences  TED

“At TED, every time we’ve listened to radical openness, we’ve been grateful,” says Chris Anderson, 53. As chief curator of TED– the Long Beach, California, conference of multidisciplinary luminaries turned viral-video phenomenon – the Brit has guided it into a newly global, open-source phase this year. Volunteers have translated thousands of videos into 76 languages and introduced TEDx, independently organized events that in the first year has produced an astonishing 500 gatherings in 70 countries and 35 languages. “Any business adviser might have told us 10 years ago, ‘Oh, beware! You’re going to dilute your brand,’” says Anderson.“TEDx has massively enhanced the brand by showing just how widespread this desire is to be stimulated and inspired.”
