How do you get to Carnegie Hall? Through YouTube.

一般人要怎样才能登上卡内基音乐厅呢？答案是，透过YouTube就行了。

Not that “practice, practice, practice” isn’t still the key to making it to the world’s most famous stage. But a new YouTube Symphony Orchestra project promises to set culture and technology on a far larger stage: YouTube’s global video platform. The immediate goal is to create a new orchestra with 100 members from around the world, coming together to perform April 15 at Carnegie Hall.

这并不代表「练习、练习、再练习」的传统苦练法已经不再是登上这个全球最知名的音乐殿堂的关键，而是新的YouTube交响乐团计划可望把文化和科技推向更广大的舞台：也就是YouTube的全球影音平台。这项计划的短程目标，是希望能集结来自世界各地的一百名乐团成员，打造出一个新的交响乐团，而所有团员在四月十五日于卡内基音乐厅齐聚一堂。

Michael Tilson Thomas, music director of the San Francisco Symphony, will conduct. The players will perform a new work by Chinese-born composer Tan Dun, written especially for the new orchestra and dubbed “Internet Symphony No. 1, ‘Eroica.’” The “Eroica” part of the title alludes to Beethoven’s revolutionary Third Symphony – just in case the potential of this project isn’t being made clear enough by its creators at Google, which owns YouTube, and in music circles worldwide.

旧金山交响乐团的音乐总监麦可．提尔森．托马斯将负责指挥，而乐手们则将演奏中国作曲家谭盾专为这个新的交响乐团所谱的曲子，取名为《第一号网络交响曲：〈英雄〉》。曲名中的「英雄」呼应了贝多芬划时代的第三交响曲（译注：英雄交响曲）──好似YouTube母公司谷歌（Google）的策划者和全球各地的音乐圈如果没能把该计划的所有潜力宣传得够清楚的话，还得用英雄的联想来加深外界的印象。

“YouTube is the biggest stage on Earth, and I want to see what the world’s undiscovered musical geniuses will create on it,” said Tan Dun, before appearing at the news conference at Google’s New York headquarters.

谭盾在出席谷歌纽约总部所举行的记者会之前透露，「YouTube是全球最大的舞台，而我也想见识一下，这些全球各地还没有被发掘的音乐人才，究竟会如何发挥这首曲目。」

The project is envisioned as an ongoing one, with classical musicians everywhere meeting in the YouTube video playground, exchanging videos and ideas, engaging in a web of dialogue to foster new collaborations, including with nonclassical music in all sorts of new directions.

该计划被视为持续进行的方案，可以让全球各地的古典乐手在YouTube的影音平台相遇，让大家可以相互交流影音内容和创意点子，让大家能开启对话的网络，进而促成更多合作方案成形，而非古典乐手也同样包括在内，希望透过这些方式能让古典音乐朝向各种不同的方向发展。

In the first phase of the project, the one leading to Carnegie Hall in April, musicians everywhere – whether amateurs in the Australian Outback or professionals in Manhattan – are invited to learn Tan Dun’s “Eroica” by downloading their parts – for violin, cello, trumpet, etc. – from the new orchestra’s YouTube site.

计划最后以四月在卡内基音乐厅的公开演奏步入高潮，而初步阶段是邀请各地的乐手──无论是澳洲内地的业余乐手，或是曼哈顿的专业乐手都包括在内──请大家先自行练习谭盾的《英雄》曲目，方式是从YouTube新交响乐团计划网址下载自己所演奏的部份，例如小提琴、大提琴、小号等。

The musicians will videotape their performances and upload the videos to the site. Then a panel of experts from the London Symphony Orchestra, San Francisco Symphony, Hong Kong Philharmonic, New York Philharmonic and other leading orchestras will narrow the field to the best participants. In 2009, the entire YouTube community will vote for the semifinalists, and ultimately the winners will be flown in April to a three-day classical music summit in New York, led by Tilson Thomas and culminating with the Carnegie performance.

All the above-named orchestras are joining YouTube in the project. Other partners – are Carnegie Hall, as well as Britain’s BBC, the Yale School of Music, and Chinese pianist Lang Lang, who performed for a television audience of billions at the Beijing Olympics. “This is one of the biggest and first online artistic collaborations on a global scale that we’ve yet seen,” said Ed Sanders, a YouTube product marketing manager.

It was another YouTube product manager, Tim Lee, who thought of the YouTube Symphony Orchestra over a coffee in London about a year ago, Sanders said.

The new YouTube Symphony channel already has plenty of content, including videotaped master classes by members of the London Symphony Orchestra, teaching viewers how to best perform Tan Dun’s new work.
