Jerome, a Taiwanese food exporter, is eating at a Mexican Restaurant in San Diego with Isabella, a local associate:

I: Sales have been strong recently.

J: Wonderful, but let’s talk business after lunch. You know, Taiwanese food and Mexican food sure share a common love.

I: Oh, yeah, the tangy bite of hot peppers. Don’t forget: the noble capsicum is native to my homeland, Mexico!

J: Alright pepper queen, why are peppers spicy? I mean, it seems a bit masochistic to eat something that hurts.

I: Only people are silly enough to eat things that hurt. Other than humans, it’s mostly birds that consume wild peppers. They, apparently, don’t feel any pain.

J: So did the mouth-burning quality of peppers evolve as a way of discouraging other animals from eating the peppers?

I: That’s what I’ve read. Also, scientists further suspect that the bright colors of wild peppers evolved to attract birds.

J: So birds would spread pepper seeds all around through their droppings?

I: That’s it. There’s even a wild pepper in the southwestern U.S. and Mexico called the bird pepper.

J: That’s a fine example of symbiosis in nature.

I: Either symbiosis or evil spirits taking revenge on the unsuspecting as my abuela believed.

J: I just hope that won’t mean Montezuma’s revenge for me!
