An arc of billowy black smoke projected on a backdrop appears on the stage in harmony with the dancers. As a black hole engulfs the center of the stage, the green, eerie light entices the dancers and sucks them in. This dynamic performance of Wind Shadow is a collaboration between the Cloud Gate Dance Theatre of Taiwan and the contemporary visual artist Cai Guo-Qiang.
Cai was born in 1957 in the port city of Quanzhou, China. Before Cai became an artist, he appeared in martial arts films, and worked as a stage designer. After experimenting with different media in his artwork, he developed an interest in using lit gunpowder. Because of the artistic and political constraints in China, Cai left for Japan. It was there that he nurtured his ideas and eventually developed his large-scale “explosion events.”
Mr. Cai’s extraordinary approach to art has led to some extravagant displays of explosion art like nothing that has ever seen before. For one of his works, the Light Cycle project for Central Park in New York, Cai used an assortment of fireworks to form a giant, explosive circle. This piece celebrated the park’s 150th anniversary and illuminated the night sky of New York.
Cai has worked with people in a variety of professions, ranging from feng shui masters to choreographers. He was also repeatedly included in the UK Journal Art Review’s Power 100. This innovative artist once said about art: “I do think that art can transcend time and space, and achieve something that science cannot.”
