Something in the way He Moved Us
George Harrison was one-quarter of the Beatles — the most popular band in history—and a successful solo artist. Today, a year after his cancer-induced death, he is still remembered for the way his music changed the world.
Born in 1943, in Liverpool, England, Harrison taught himself guitar by listening to early rock ‘n roll heroes such as Carl Perkins and Chuck Berry. At fifteen, he joined Paul McCartney and John Lennon in a band that would later evolve into the Beatles, along with fellow Liverpudlian, Ringo Starr. In fact, it was Harrison’s lead guitar that transformed the ensemble into a bona fide rock ‘n roll band.
Yet, to truly understand Harrison’s place in music history, one would have to understand just how big the Beatles became: on April 4, 1964, they concurrently monopolized the top five U.S. singles and two albums, accomplishing the most complete chart domination of all time, another record, for achieving twenty U.S. number ones, remains unbroken to this today.
If Elvis was King, then John, Paul, George, and Ringo must have been gods; the Beatles weren’t just appreciated — they were worshiped. In 1966, when Lennon said to a British Journalist, “We’re more popular than Jesus,” he wasn’t far wrong.

Out of the Shadows
In the beginning, Harrison was perceived as the quiet Beatles, the one who used his guitar and voice to modestly fill the spaces between the super-egos of Lennon and McCartney. But he progressed from being the band’s “Third Man” to establish himself as the conscience and soul of a generation.
When the “Fab Four” were at the height of their fame and influence, Harrison introduced them — and therefore the Western world—to India music, culture, and religion. Many people say that world music and global culture only really took off when Harrison began playing the sitar on songs such as “Norwegian Wood” and promoting Hindu philosophy on the mind-bending Sergeant Pepper album.
Ultimately, he will be best remembered as a composer of exquisite, timeless songs, which range from the sardonic “Taxman” to the sublime “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” and from the soulful prayer of “My Sweet Lord” to the superb poetry of “Something.”
Up to the time of his death last November, Harrison was still writing songs about love, awareness, and finding God. And today he is still touching souls with a kind of music that seems to live forever.
