Everywhere you look these days, there’s somebody pitching an insurance policy. With so many alternatives available, it’s not easy to find the right one for you. The key is finding the right coverage at the right price. To do so, you must choose a reliable provider, then ask some pertinent questions.

Despite the many channels of advertising, there are only four channels through which insurance is sold. Insurance brokers serve the interests of several firms, and provide a variety of policy choices. An insurance agent, on the other hand, represents the products of just one insurance company. Direct sellers are similar to agents, but sell exclusively over the phone. The final alternative is to purchase your policy through a group plan offered through work or a professional association. Prices are generally comparable, so it’s most important to find a provider that you can trust.

To ensure the coverage is right for you, ask about a policy’s exclusion. Exclusions are what a policy doesn’t cover – and every policy has them. For life insurance, ask about premiums and interest rates, and whether they change during the life of the policy.

Doing your homework before you make a commitment will ensure there are fewer complications down the road.

Michelle is on the computer while her husband Sam watches TV:

M: Hey, Sam, check out this pop-up. This company claims they can offer us the same coverage we have on our house, but at half the price.

S: I doubt that. With insurance, you pretty much get what you pay for. If someone is offering a policy for substantially less, you’ll get substantially less.

M: Yeah, cut-rate companies are probably not the ones you want to deal with during a crisis. And besides, we just renewed our policy last month. If we switch providers now, they’ll slap us with a stiff penalty.

S: That’s not the only reason I wouldn’t consider switching insurers. Insurance is very much about trust. If we switch providers too often, insurance companies may not give us the benefit of the doubt when we actually file a claim.

M: Also, our insurance provider offers a discount if we maintain a clean record for ten years.

S: Hmm ….. that’s a long time to go without filing a claim.

M: Which means you’ll have to get off that couch and install the new security system and deadbolt lock we talked about. In insurance lingo, that’s called risk management.

S: No, that’s called tricking me into doing work on the weekend!
