If you’ve seen the hit British movie “Notting Hill,” starring Julia Roberts, you may recall a touching scene in which Roberts; character, Anna, presents her sweetheart, William, with a painting. The colorful canvas depicts a couple on their wedding day, surrounded by mystical creatures, including a violin-playing goat and a dancing fish. This enchanting yet haunting image, named “La Mariee,“ is a typical example of the work of the multi-talented artist Marc Chagall.

Born into a Jewish family in late 19th-century Russia, Chagall was the eldest of nine children. Life for Jews in Russia at the time was harsh, as they were discriminated against and forbidden to own land. Although his family was poor, young Marc’s childhood was far from bleak, thanks largely to the efforts of his mother, who strongly encouraged him to pursue his artistic talents.

After leaving school, Chagall defied his father’s wishes and fled to the city of St. Petersburg in 1906 to attend art college. There, he first encountered the works of great French painters like Monet, Cézanne, and MatisseFascinated by their techniques and styles, Chagall decided a few years later to settle in Paris, where he eventually befriended another artistic genius, Picasso.

Besides art, the other great love of Chagall’s life was his wife, Bella. They were married for 29 years until her untimely death, which left Chagall so devastated that he couldn’t paint for a whole year. Chagall himself managed to live to the ripe old age of 97, and he was laid to rest in his adopted France in 1985.

Despite becoming a French citizen, Chagall never forget his Jewish roots in Russia. Many of his paintings represent the simple village life of his childhood, along with themes from Jewish folklore. Chagall’s style is also characterized by a vivid use of color, which helps his paintings radiate a sense of optimism and delight. Picasso was an admirer of Chagall’s sensitive perception of color, commenting that, “When Matisse dies, Chagall will be the only painter left who understands what color is.”

Chagall was quite open-minded when it came to religion, and he included Christian, as well as Jewish symbolism in his works. Perhaps the greatest example of this is the painting “White Crucifixion.” Painted in 1938, just before World War II, it depicts Jesus hung up on the cross while around him Jews are being persecuted by Nazis and Communists. It is widely regarded as one of his masterpieces, and has been praised as one of the most forceful condemnations of war ever put to canvas.

Not limited to being a brilliant painter, Chagall was constantly exploring different types of art, such as sculpture, tapestry, and printmaking. Towards the end of his career, he embarked on a series of projects to design stained glass windows for churches in Berlin, France, and Germany. His message of religious understanding and tolerance was seen as ideal for such an enterprise.

There is a well-known English proverb that states “Jack of all trades, master of none.” However, Marc Chagall’s impressively diverse career proved he was a master of many.
