In this digital age, although vast amounts of information can be reached with a few clicks of a mouse, the Internet has virtually become a playground for all sorts of tricksters. For example, hackers can use computer viruses to invade your hard drive and steal personal information from you at lightning speed. If you are still unaware of malicious software, or “malware,” you may find yourself paying the price later.
To avoid being ripped off, you should know what you are up against Programs known as Trojan horses are one of the nastiest types of malware on the web today. They appear benign, but are in fact designed to snatch your identity. Remote users can use malware to access your credit card information and go on an online shopping spree in your name.
If this isn’t bad enough, there are also programs called “worms,” which replicate themselves and use up the computer’s resources. They have been known to shut down major companies’ computer systems for days. Spyware is another bothersome program. It sneaks into your computer system, often alongside free software applications. Soon, it begins to display advertisements, change system settings, and gather information about you for marketing purpose.

What can you do to protect yourself? Fortunately, there are a variety of ways to shield your computer and guard your personal information. The first method is to be cautious. Never open email attachments from people you don’t know. Some files carry programs that might do serious damage to a computer. Another email scam to watch out for is phishing, the act of sending an email to a user and falsely claiming to be a legitimate business. Phishers attempt to deceive the user into surrendering private information that will be used for their purposes later on.
Along with caution, everyone should use a firewall to protect their computers. A firewall can detect programs that are trying to enter your computer system via the Internet. A user then has the option to allow or deny the connection. However, a firewall alone isn’t good enough. Anti-virus software and anti-spyware programs are both a must. They respectively keep viruses and spyware from making mischief in your machine. Viruses change all the time, so remember to choose a program that can be updated often.
With more computers getting connected each year, the World Wide Web will continue to be a grand source of information and entertainment. Nevertheless, it is a sad fact that some people intend to exploit it for ill-gotten gains. All we can do is try to stay one technological step ahead of them.
