Treating with Turmeric
Aspirin came from the bark of the willow tree, cholesterol-lowing statins were found in a mold, and a treatment for malaria called artemisinin came from a shrub used in traditional Chinese medicine. Actually, many of the most effective medicinal treatments were not artificially manufactured in a lab. They were derived from the natural world around us. Now, an orange-yellow powder called turmeric may be ready to join this life-preserving list.
Turmeric has been known in medical circles for approximately 5,000 years. In the past, it has been used in treating wounds, cleansing the blood, and soothing stomachaches. Recently, researchers have discovered that turmeric may have the potential to fight such debilitating and deadly diseases as cancer, diabetes, arthritis and Alzheimer’s disease, among others. Turmeric may be used not only as a treatment, but as a preventative agent as well.
Trials are underway to see if turmeric can prevent many different diseases, from allergies to colon cancer. As with any new drug that is still in the clinical trial stages, turmeric may have its downside. Some researchers have published results showing that turmeric may actually encourage the growth of cancer cells.
For the time being, the world will have to wait before the final verdict on turmeric comes in. Nonetheless, there is no denying its potential to become an inexpensive alternative to mainstream treatment, which proves, once again, that the natural world has amazing healing powers.

Saving the Planet One T-shirt at a Time 服装减量救地球
Global warming has become a phrase heard almost daily in our lives. We all know that buying organic food and reducing energy consumption are two simple ways to do our part to slow the overheating of our planet. But how about the clothes we wear? Could environmental problems be linked to fashion?
A major problem with the clothing industry is a phenomenon known as “fast fashion,” that is, selling cheap clothing which can be worn and cast aside without a second thought. Many people love this concept, since it allows them to change their style every time the fashion tide turns without spending a small fortune. However, this trend contributes to global warming because of the methods in which the clothing is produced and maintained.
Natural fabrics, such as cotton, are often thought of as good for our environment. However, cotton clothing requires more energy to maintain as it needs higher temperatures for washing and longer drying periods. Synthetic materials such as polyester, on the other hand, may take more energy to create initially, but can be washed in cold water and dried more quickly. They use much less energy over a lifetime and last longer.
In order to lengthen the lifespan of our planet. The textile industry needs to be more eco-conscious. A “clothing library” where people rent clothes for a season might be plausible. Offering consumers a discount on new clothing when they recycle their old clothes is another possibility. Consumers can do their part by buying durable clothes and wearing them until they’re no longer wearable. People should wash clothes at lower temperatures, and then leave them in the sun to dry. We may want to look our best, but not when the price is the loss of our planet.
