McJob

n. Slang an unstimulating, low-paid job with few prospects, especially one created by the expansion of the service sector.

This is the Oxford English Dictionary’s definition of McJob, added in 2001. Before that, McJob had been part of the U.S. vocabulary in the same context for about 15 years.

Today, McDonald’s, from which the term originally arose, is “not loving” the dictionary’s entry at all. They are demanding that it be altered or axed entirely. McDonald’s charges that the definition is insulting and out-of-date. The Oxford English Dictionary declines to change it, however, saying it records words as they are used, not according to individual requests.

Eating Your Way to Better Health

In the classic cartoon, Popeye, the sailor eats spinach to gain super strength. Can this really happen? No, but according to Joy Bauer, author of Joy Bauer’s Food Cures, what we eat is the key to good health. “by eating the right foods in the right combinations, you can help treat, manage, and sometimes cure common health concerns,” she says. Snacking on guavas, bell peppers and strawberries – all high in Vitamin C – helps keep your skin smooth. Eating vegetables, fruit, carbohydrates (like brown rice) together with protein can even lift your mood!
