Taiwanese Scientists Discover Secret to a Long Life  台湾科学家发现长寿的秘密

Ever since ancient times, man has been searching for the secret to eternal life. Now, a group of Taiwanese scientists may have finally found the answer. The 12-member team, from National Yang-Ming University, say they have identified a gene that may be responsible for aging in mammals. While researching genes linked to liver cancer in mice, the scientists noticed that one mouse lacking the Cisd2 gene aged prematurely. Their discovery points to this particular gene having a vital role in longevity, a conclusion that fits with previous guesswork. The scientists are currently experimenting with putting antioxidants into the diet as a way to renew the gene, which they believe might prolong life. The lead professor, Tsai Ting-fen, refused to reveal what kind of antioxidant they were using, saying only that for now eating plenty of fruit and vegetables is still the best way to fight off old man time.

During his impressive career, he has won a host of awards, including the Executive Yuan’s Culture Award and the National Award for Arts. Now, Lin Hwai-min, the celebrated choreographer and founder of Cloud Gate Dance Theatre, can add the coveted Movimentos Lifetime Award to his long list of honors. Founded in 2004, the International Movimentos Dance Awards are held every five years to recognize brilliant talent in the field of dance. In May, Lin received his award at a ceremony in Germany, at which Cloud Gate also performed. The awards jury praised Lin, who became only the second choreographer to pick up the prize, for liberating Chinese dance from Chinese traditions without breaking those traditions. Lin founded Cloud Gate Dance Theatre in 1973 and revolutionized dance in Taiwan by putting together dances that took Chinese mythology, folklore, and artistic principles as their inspiration but added a contemporary twist.
