Nestled in the tropical waters just off Thailand’s west coast, the islands of Tarutao shine like jewels against the brilliant blue Andaman Sea. Lounging on the porch of my thatched bamboo hut, I felt like I was in heaven. On both sides, the baked white sands of the beach were invitingly empty. Ahead of me, then calm blue waters stretched out into the horizon.

位于泰国西岸的热带外海，塔鲁陶群岛在蔚蓝安达曼海衬托下，宛如耀眼的珠宝。我在茅草竹屋的门廊歇息，彷佛置身于天堂。在我两侧，炙热的白沙滩空荡荡，相当吸引人。在我前方，平静的蓝海延伸至地平线。

Koh Lipe, the most popular spot in the island chain, is a beach lover’s paradise. It is a simple place, without electricity or any of the other aspects of modern civilization. But those luxuries are forgotten here because of the gorgeous natural beauty. I was perfectly content in the small bamboo hut I had to myself, with its porch made out of rough, knotty wood.

Stepping down off my porch and onto the pristine beach, I strolled down along the coast. Passing other small huts that sold drinks and simple meals, I was delighted by the friendly shouts of “Sabadee-kap!” from local shopkeepers.

走下门廊，踏上原始纯朴的海滩，我沿着海岸漫步。行经贩卖饮料和便餐的小屋时，当地店家一声声亲切地叫唤：「撒巴地卡波！」，让我很高兴。

Evening began to fall. I sat under the coconut tree to watch the fisherman return from their day’s work. As the sun dipped lower into the horizon, their boats cast a beautiful silhouette against the evening sky.

The next day I awoke early to catch the morning ferry. It was difficult to tear myself away from the lovely beach of Koh Lipe. Still, I knew further adventures awaited me at my next destination, the island of Koh Tarutao.

隔天我早早起身，好赶上晨间渡船。要我和美丽的利辟岛海滩分开，实在很困难，但我知道下一个目的地塔鲁陶岛有更多探险等着我。

If development on Koh Lipe was sparse, on Koh Tarutao it was almost nonexistent. The island was designated as a national park, and most construction was banned. As primitive as my thatched hut had been, it was the lap of luxury compared with the simple tent I stayed in on the beaches of Koh Tarutao.

如果说利辟岛的建设稀少，那么塔鲁陶岛的发展几乎不存在。该岛被指定为国家公园，大部分建设都被禁止。虽然我先前住的茅屋非常原始，但和我在塔鲁陶岛海滩住的简易帐篷相比，可谓奢侈。

The island is known particularly for its spectacular waterfalls. Following a cleared trail through the underbrush, I came upon a large, rapidly-flowing stream. This, I had been told, would take me to Lu Du, the most beautiful waterfall on the island.

I noticed that the trail was moving closer and closer to the river itself. Soon I found myself scrambling on the banks and, eventually, right into the river itself! I hopped from one smooth, mossy rock to the next and continued on upstream. Passing a tranquil, small pool, I paused to soak my weary legs and gather my strength for the tough climb ahead.

It was peaceful and relaxing here, but the gentle roar of the distant waterfall soon spurred me back on my way. Back on the river, I followed the sound as it began to grow louder. The stream under my feet grew faster, and I began to see swirls of white water around the larger rocks. Each pool that I passed grew larger, with taller and taller waterfalls feeding into them.

Taking off my sweat-soaked clothes, I dove into the cool waters. To my delight, I found that I was not alone. As I swam, a school of brightly-colored fish scattered in every direction. Lazily, a small turtle appeared out of the green depths and rose to the surface. It paused for a second, eyeing me with wary curiosity before disappearing under the water with a petulant splash.

脱去被汗水浸湿的衣裳，我跳进清凉的水里。令我高兴的是，我发现我并不孤单。我游泳时，一群色彩明亮的鱼朝四方散开；一只乌龟懒洋洋地从绿潭深处出现，游到地面。牠停留了一下，以警觉的好奇双眼看着我，又暴躁的扑通一声，消失于水里。

Cool and refreshed, I lazed about in the water and listened to the hypnotic sounds of the rushing water. Suddenly, the air was spilt by a different kind of roar. It was a massive thunderclap, and the sky above me opened with rain. Gathering my clothes together, I made my way back down the river, enjoying the feeling of the warm tropical rain against my skin.
