As you approach Cape Town by boat, the first thing you’ll see in the far-off distance is Table Mountain. The level plateau, flanked by steep cliffs, forms a dramatic backdrop to the city sprawling out beneath it. If you’re lucky, light clouds will float gently on the top, giving the impression that a tablecloth has been laid for a giant’s banquet.

Robben Island will give you a glimpse into South Africa’s dark history. Situated 12 km from the mainland, it was a place of exile and imprisonment for 400 years. During the apartheid years, political prisoners like Nelson Mandela spent decades in brutal isolation.
