If riding the MRT and walking through the streets of the urban jungle doesn’t satisfy your need for excitement, perhaps you’re due for an adventure. So, how does walking among lions, giraffes, and elephants sound? If you’re passionate about wildlife and ready to take on a new challenge, then going on a safari may just be the cure for all your urban ailments.
The word “safari” means journey in Swahili. Initially, the term referred to hunting expeditions in East Africa, but nowadays, it has come to represent the activity of watching and photographing big game wildlife all around the continent. On African safaris, visitors are often taken through unspoiled wilderness, right into the heart of the animals’ natural habitat. There are no cages or barriers to separate you from the majestic creatures, and the fear and excitement of being so close to the animals is a big part of the appeal.
African safaris can include a whole range of activities, each catering to a variety of different interests. One of the most common safaris is the “game drive.” Guides and drivers accompany you in a jeep or truck, and take you across the vast African grasslands in search of big game. Lucky visitors may even be able to spot “The Big Five:” lions, elephants, buffaloes, leopards, and rhinos.

For those more comfortable on water, there are boating or canoeing safaris. Visitors can enjoy beautiful riverside scenery while looking out for birds or big game. In some parts of Africa, guides will take guests out in traditional canoes called “mokoros.”
But for the ultimate adventure, every safari veteran would agree that a walking safari is the way to go. Traveling on foot through the remote African bush gives visitors an up-close-and-personal connection with Africa’s magnificent natural environment. One of the most exciting parts of a walking safari is trying not to be spotted by the game. Upon seeing humans, most big game tend to run away, so approaching the animals takes skill, patience, and just a touch of ninja-like stealth!
Not all safaris take place in Africa, however. In 1994, Singapore opened the Night Safari, a 40-hectare park that is only open at night, giving visitors the rare opportunity to explore the wonders of the world’s nocturnal species. The exotic creatures, which include tarsiers and flying squirrels, are made visible by a special kind of lighting that resembles moonlight. This unique innovation ensures that the natural nighttime habits of the animals remain undisturbed.
So, for your next vacation, leave the hoards of tourists at the zoo behind, and take a walk on the wild side with a safari adventure!
