Called to a house on a quiet suburban street, a crime scene investigator immediately begins taking note of every frightful detail. A vehicle has crashed into the living room of the home. The driver of the car died from his injuries. He is still buckled into the driver’s seat. Is it a clear-cut car accident, or were more sinister forces at work in the man’s death? Now, at a special traveling exhibit which is making a stop in Taiwan from April 24th to July 23rd, people can throw themselves into the world of the hugely popular television show CSI: Crime Scene Investigation.
At the exhibit, called CSI: The Experience, visitors can immerse themselves in a day in the life of a crime scene investigator. With the help of the latest advances in the world of evidence detection and collection, they will be able to gather clues in one of three simulated crime scenes. Rookie CSIs will not only collect data from the scene by analyzing fingerprints, blood patterns, and bullet casings, but will also be able to perform further tests in a secondary laboratory space.
In the lab, the techs-for-a-day will have the chance to study DNA evidence and age progression. In the end, the detectives will use the evidence they have collected to answer a series of multi-choice questions on touch screens. Then, they will move on to a re-creation of the office of Gil Grissom, the main character on the TV show, to see how their findings measure up against those of real CSIs.

CSI: Crime Scene Investigation is one the most popular TV program in North America. The original show, set in Las Vegas, a.k.a. Sin City, has prompted spinoff shows set in Miami and New York, and has also spawned numerous websites, discussion forums, and a large amount of fan-made art. The sheer dedication of the program’s fans is a testament to the ingenuity displayed by the show’s creative team.
CSI is known for featuring unusual camera angles and rapid-fire editing techniques, along with somewhat gruesome depictions of things like bullet wounds and other instances of graphic bodily harm and internal organ damage. But it’s not all blood and guts – far from it. The show is tempered with plenty of high-tech gadgets and detailed technical discussion that would normally be beyond the reach of a layperson. It’s all presented in such a way, however, to make it comprehensible to the average viewer.
So pervasive has the show proven in contemporary culture that it has led to something known as the “CSI effect.” This refers to the fact that, in part due to the popularity of the show, people are becoming increasingly aware of and educated about the collection and importance of forensic evidence. As a result, many lawyers have changed the way they present cases to juries, feeling pressured to exhibit more forensic evidence in court to an increasingly savvy public. It just goes to show that CSI’s creator, Anthony Zuiker, has succeeded in achieving his goal of translating entertainment into education.
