The puck bounces off the boards with a loud thud. Immediately, the center scoops it up and streaks to the net, intensely followed by a defenseman. The fans jump to their feet as he fires a powerful shot. The goalie leaps to his left, and raises his glove above his shoulder. Time freezes. The light behind the net flashes red. He scores!
For a handful of northern countries, ice hockey is almost a religion. The surfaces of lakes and rivers there freeze in winter, forming the grounds for the sport. Congregations of fans don their favorite team’s apparel and worship the sheer speed and athleticism. Over the years, the physically punishing style has made the game a thrill to watch.
It was European immigrants who brought ice hockey to North America. In 1888, at Montreal’s Winter Carnival, Canada’s Governor General, Lord Stanley, was blown away by the speed, skill, and ferocity of the game. He was so impressed that in 1892 he decided to donate a trophy, which would be presented to the champion of the game. So began the story of the most famous trophy in sport: The Stanley Cup.
Nowadays, the principal professional hockey league is known as the National Hockey League, (NHL). Its thirty teams in Canada and the U.S. vie for Lord Stanley’s cup. Even though it has become big business, ice hockey still inspires young children who dream of scoring the goal that wins the Stanley Cup.
