Selma and Marty are going to Morocco. Selma has just finished packing: 希尔玛和马帝准备前往摩洛哥。希尔玛刚把行李打包好。

 

S: Ta-da! I’m ready to roll.

好啦，我准备好上路了！

 

M: Is there anything left in the closet? You’ve packing two gigantic bags for us!

衣柜里还有东西剩下吗？你帮我们整了两大袋耶！

 

S: Us? This is just my stuff.

我们？这些是我一个人的。

 

M: What? Shouldn’t we be aiming for one small bag each?

什么？！我们不是应该以一人带一小袋为目标吗？

 

S: The more we take, the smaller the chance of forgetting something.

我们带越多东西，忘东忘西的机会就越小呀！

 

M: I have a better way: a week or so before I pack, I start jotting down essential items as I use them.

我有个比较好的方法：从打包行李前一星期左右开始，我一用到什么必须品，就把它给记下来。

 

S: That does make sense; if I did that, it wouldn’t be like last time, when I forgot my hairbrush.

那蛮有道理的；如果这么做，我就不会像上次那样忘记带梳子了。

 

M: And your toothbrush. And your deodorant. And ---

还有牙刷，还有除臭剂，还有──

 

S: At least take a peek inside my bags---I think you’ll agree my packing methods are up to snuff.

你就至少瞄一眼袋子里面嘛──我想你会同意我的打包方法堪称标准喔。

 

M: Ha! Your unmentionables are all over the place! The trick is to pack neatly, you know, grouping similar items together.

哈！你的内衣散得到处都是！你知道打包行李的诀窍是整齐，就是把类似的物品分好放在一起。

 

S: Well, at least I packed my valuables at the bottom of one of the bags, where they’ll be safe.

嗯，至少我把贵重物品都藏在同一个袋子底部，那里很安全。

 

M: Your passport?! Your plane ticket?! Your medication?! –What if that bag get lost?

你的护照？！机票？！还有药？万一袋子不见怎么办？

 

S: On second thought; maybe crucial items should go in my carry-on.

再想想，也许重要的东西应该随身携带才是。

 

M: Good idea. But first, Selma, take out the cowboy hat—and the hair dryer!

Marty become Selma’s packing coach:  马帝成为希尔玛的打包教练。

 

M: Now, tell me what else is in those bags.

现在，告诉我这两袋里面还有什么玩意儿。

 

S: Okeydokey: shorts, a parka—

好啦。有短裤，有连风帽的雪衣──

 

M: A parka in North Africa? Get a grip! And shorts, Selma, are culturally inappropriate.

去北非带雪衣？搞清楚状况好不好！还有短裤，希尔玛，就当地文化来说是不妥的。

 

S: Right. I’ll amend that to a light jacket and pants, then… And no jeans: They’re heavy, and they take forever to dry.

对耶。我会改带轻薄的夹克和长裤……还有，不要带牛仔裤：那很重，又难干得要命。

 

M: Good! With so few items, the key is to mix and match; that means nixing those won’t-go-with-anything purple-and-green high-tops I see there.

很好！东西要少，关键是能互相搭配；也就是说，把我看到的那双什么也配不了的紫绿色高统靴给拿掉！

 

S: OK, I’ll go for a decent pair of walking shoes instead, in a neutral color. How about the sarong I got in Thailand last year?

M: Take it; you can’t go wrong with an all-in-one wrap, beach blanked, sheet, and scarf.

S: That’ll leave plenty of room for the economy-sized toiletries I picked up.

那我就有足够的空间带我买到的经济包盥洗用品了。

 

M: Think again! Remember: The lighter the bags, the more enjoyable the journey.

再想一想！记着：行李越轻，旅行会越愉快。

 

S: Right. Small bottles it is then. Wow! At this rate, I’ll get everything into one bag---and a pint-sized one at that! I could even take it on the plane as carry-on luggage!

没错。那带小瓶的就好了。哇！照这样下去，我一个包包就够放所有的东西了──还是个小不溜丢的！甚至可以当作随身行李上飞机了！
