For some teenagers, the thought of a summer job evokes visions of monotonous, mind-numbing labor. It doesn’t have to be this way. With jobs available to suit all personalities, teenagers have many options when entering the workforce. What teenagers learn from these jobs depends on their attitude.

If they enter a position with a negative attitude, they will obviously derive little benefit from the employment. However, if they see the job as an opportunity to acquire knowledge and skills that they could use later in life, their summer job could be very rewarding. No matter how insignificant their positions may be, they’ve been given an invitation to learn the ins and outs of a business. To maximize this opportunity, they should try working in many positions and asking numerous questions.

For teenagers who can’t stomach the idea of working in convenient stores or waiting tables, there are alternatives. They can generate their own employment opportunities by going door-to-door in small industrial and office centers or inquiring at local companies about summer intern programs. Even if teenagers work for themselves – for example, babysitting or house painting – the experience can be invaluable. With the right attitude, a summer job may be a stepping stone to success.

At the end of summer vacation, Stanley, a senior high school student, is having dinner with his friend, Beverly:

B: I can’t believe you spent your summer vacation working!

S: Why not? I did what I love doing: playing on computers.

B: I’ll never understand you computer geeks! I also don’t get why an I.T. company hired you instead of a college student.

S: Many computer companies are offering summer jobs to teenager. They don’t have to pay us as much as college students or graduates.

B: Well, I suppose if I had an I.T. company, I’d also want to hire a cheap worker who eats, sleeps and breathes computers.

S: Now you’ve switched onto their train of thought. Computer companies scoop up teenagers who are passionate about new technology and are rewarded with enthusiastic, self-motivated employees.

B: It sounds like the computer companies are coming up roses, but what do you get out of it?

S: Real job experience. Having this position on my resume is going to be beneficial later on.

B: I guess, but working for minimum wage is still for the birds.

S: Actually, the pay is much higher than traditional summer job wages. I saved quite a bit this summer.

B: In that case, dinner is on you, Mr. Money Bags!
