Once best known for political instability, and student riots. South Korea is now beaming with pride at its vibrant economy and popular cultural exports. But that’s not putting a smile on the faces of everyone in the Asian region.
South Korea’s rise was no accident. Following the devastating 1997 Financial Crisis, the country reformed its economic policies, particularly focusing on revitalizing its entertainment industries. This worked better than anyone expected, and soon South Korean actors and singers started enjoying success, not just in South Korea, but across Asia. A phenomenon known as the South Korea wave began and spearheaded an expansion in South Korean electronics, 3G communication devices, and, interestingly, tourism. In 2003, for example, over 200,000 people flew to South Korea, many solely to visit the sets and studios where their favorite South Korean soap operas (such as the immeasurably popular Winter Sonata) were filmed.
But not everyone is a fan of the new South Korean dynamism. Here in Taiwan, the government is considering imposing a 20 percent levy on Korean goods to protect local industries. In Japan, where the backlash has been hardest, some Japanese comic book artists have rekindled age-old stereotype of Koreans with openly racist stories and drawings. Still, for now the backlash is relatively small and most people view South Korean’s emergence as a positive development for the region.
