Alfred Hitchcock, master of suspense and cinematic development, outdid himself with his exquisitely psychological 1954 thriller Rear Window. In Rear Window, Hitchcock constructs an atmosphere of stifling claustrophobia which examines the relationship of the observer and the observed.
L.B. “Jeff” Jeffries (James Steward) is an adventurous photographer whose broken leg confines him to a wheelchair in his apartment. Only the visits by his nurse, Stella, and his high-society girlfriend Lisa (Grace Kelly), interrupt Jeff’s boredom. As Lisa dotes on him, Jeff’s ambivalence towards their relationship mounts. Driven to distraction, Jeff begins spying on his neighbors through his apartment’s rear window.
As Jeff peeps on his neighbors, moviegoers see and hear everything from his perspective. Each neighbor – from Miss Lonelyhearts, who entertains imaginary lovers, to Miss Torso, a gorgeous, sociable dancer, to Thorvald, with his nagging wife – seems like a projection of Jeff’s own relationship anxieties. After Thorvald’s wife disappears, the audience sees Jeff noticing a saw, a suitcase, and a freshly dug hole. Is it murder, or the collapse of Jeff’s sanity?
Jeffries’s passive observation suggests the disengaged voyeurism of movie watching itself. Hitchcock’s message to moviegoers emerges clearly when Stella says “…. People ought to ….. get outside their own house and look in for a change.”

Hugh and his girlfriend Stephanie, who is propping up her sprained ankle, have just watched Rear Window:
S: Are you suggesting I’m going to develop into a voyeur because of my injury?
H: Well, the thought had crossed my mind …. just joshing. Hitchcock sure knew how to plan a movie, huh?
S: You can say that again. Everything happens in one room over – what – four days?
H: Right. When the camera takes Jeff’s perspective, it’s almost like watching TV with a remote, and each apartment he ogles is a separate channel.
S: Yet the only apartment he doesn’t watch is the one with the happy newlyweds!
H: Which shows his uneasiness with relationships. The unique structure of Rear Window makes Jimmy Stewart both the film’s subject and director.
S: Then he should’ve been watching his gorgeous girlfriend. Especially when she flashes her nightgown and says, “Preview of coming attractions.”
H: But that erotic interest sure sets up the following scene where she’s modeling her lingerie until a scream shatters the mood.
S: What a master of montage! Apparently, Hitchcock’s planning was so exact, there were only a few dozen meters of film left behind on the cutting room floor!
H: Meanwhile, can I get you some binoculars to while away your convalescence?
S: I’ll read, thanks.
