We’ve all heard of music, film, folk, or food festivals, but what about “fringe” festivals? As the name implies, a fringe festival is on-the-edge – an “anything goes” event celebrating live theater and performance art from around the world.
For performers, fringe festivals are known for being uncensored and audition-free events. Any group or individual able to scrape together the entry fee can apply for a spot – so let the buyer beware! For spectators, a typical day of “fringing” might include tossing a few coins to a street performer known as the “Push-Up Guy” whose shtick is “push-ups-on-demand,” before continuing to a professional performance of Hamlet inside a parking garage transformed temporarily into a live theater!
The fringe phenomenon began in 1947 in Edinburgh, Scotland, when eight acting companies – inspired by large crowds attending the Edinburgh International Festival – started a side, or “fringe” festival. Now bigger than its inspiration, the Edinburgh Festival Fringe is also the world’s largest.
The success of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe has given rise to many world-class entertainers, and has inspired an ever-growing number of fringe festivals in cities across North America, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand. The world’s second largest fringe festival takes place annually in Edmonton, Canada.

Frank and Lorraine are looking over a program in the beer tent at the Edmonton Fringe Festival:
F: Two hundred shows to choose from! Where to begin?
L: This one-man show by “master impressionist” Charles Ross sounds good. He performs the entire Lord of The Rings trilogy in one hour, playing all the characters “without the use of costume, set, or special effects.”
F: What if it sucks? I saw a show last year where a woman just came on stage and tore pages out of a phone book. I was ripped off!
L: Tough luck, Frank. But that’s the fun of the Fringe Festival! Because the performance applications are uncensored, it’s a risk for the audience and the artists.
F: You know, the festival’s touring acts have to be good to survive. They do the entire North American fringe circuit, traveling from city to city, crashing with billets or in their camper vans.
L: That’s stamina. I just read about this Mark Meer guy. Last year’s reigning “King of the Edmonton Fringe,” he was in over thirty-six performances!
F: Crazy. (sees a street performer) Speaking of crazy, what’s that?
L: Oh that’s just Gunsmoke, the cowboy on stilts. Careful, or he’ll douse us with his water pistols.
F: Let’s get to the show!
