Around the world this year, museums and other art institutions are celebrating the hundred-year anniversary of the birth of Salvador Dali, one of the most important artists of the twentieth century. Born in Spain in 1904, Dali – along with the French writer André Breton – became one of the leaders of the avant-garde art movement known as “Surrealism” that flourished in Paris during the 1920s. Possibly his most famous painting, entitled The Persistence of Memory (1931), has become an iconic image with its bizarrely melting clocks set against a desert background.

Dali was interested in other media besides painting, especially cinema. He wrote a number of film scenarios, and Un Chien Andalou (1928), his collaboration with the famous director and fellow Spaniard, Luis Buñuel, is considered a classic of experimental cinema.

Coinciding with the Dali centennial was a posthumous Oscar nomination for Destino, an animated short film he developed for Walt Disney in the 1940s. Due to financial constraints at the time, the studio cancelled production of the film. However, using Dali’s surviving sketches, notes, fifteen seconds of completed animation, and the assistance of digital technology, Disney’s current animators were able to complete the film as closely as possible to Dali’s original vision.
