Imagine you’re driving down a long stretch of highway. It’s 3 A.M., and you’re tired. Soon, you will able to transfer the controls of the car to your passenger by simply handing him or her video game-style handgrips.
In the near future, the automotive industry is poised to make such a scenario possible by employing new technologies that will makes cars more efficient, programmable, and interactive. Driving this revolutionary automotive experience are advances in electronics and engine design. Already, conveniences such as keyless entry and start, GPS map displays, and voice command controls (for example, lights, turn signals) have found their way into high-end models. Increasingly, these handy options are being installed in less expensive vehicles because the cost of producing and equipping cars with electronic rather than mechanical systems is declining rapidly.
Efficiency and luxury are not the only reasons automakers are installing “driver-assistance system.” Safety will be enhanced by new computerized radar systems that actively anticipate danger and warn drivers to make the necessary driving corrections. Furthermore, cameras all around the car will eliminate drivers’ blind spots.
Although these new advances are tantalizing, not all drivers are willing to pay for these new gizmos. Only the market will tell which technologies will drive the future.

Scott and his wife Benda are looking at a new car together.
S: Wow, check out the futuristic features on this car!
B: It’s almost like The Jetsons. Is there any option that it doesn’t have?
S: I don’t think so. It comes with a GPS navigation system, keyless entry, and cameras in the bumpers. It’s even got hybrid drive-by-wire steering!
B: Drive-by-wire steering? So it uses an electronic, rather than a physical connection, to connect the driver to the steering system?
S: Yeah, but as a “hybrid” it also has a conventional steering system as a backup. Apparently, it’s getting cheaper to design and make cars with electronic instead of traditional mechanical systems.
B: Wow, that’s really cool. So, are cars going to drive themselves soon?
S: Probably not for a long while. Designing software allowing a car to drive itself safely in the real world has proven a tough nut to crack.
B: Whoa! You just said that electronics were cheaper. Help, I’m reeling from sticker shock!
S: Ouch. You’re right. I like all the bells and whistles, but this model is way out of our reach. Ready to go?
B: Yeah. I guess it’s time to drive on. It would be a lot cooler, though, if we could fly away like the Jetsons did.
