The FBI recently stated that “phishing,” or conning online users into submitting sensitive information through a skillfully forged webpage, is the “hottest, and most troubling, new scam on the Internet.” The skill with which the appearance of trusted banking and corporate websites can be faked by phishers cannot be underestimated. And once these online fraudsters obtain someone’s vital personal information, they’ve got the keys to unlocking bank and credit card accounts or to creating fraudulent accounts in an assumed name. Victims – maybe yourself – must then cope with the troublesome consequences.

Though online phishing is relatively new, con artists seeking your sensitive information by posing as trusted officials isn’t. Bogus security checks over the phone or through text messaging have lured even the most skeptical into divulging credit card or bank account numbers, passwords, and other important data.

Fortunately, there are some simple preventive measures. Most importantly, remember that banks and credit card companies almost never ask for your information online or over the phone – they’ve already got that information. At home, shred all unwanted financial correspondence before tossing it out. Lastly, report any suspicious account activity to your bank immediately.
