These days, only the smallest offices can survive without a computer network. When the number of employees increases an office’s requirements for connectivity, data sharing, or advanced software applications, it’s usually time to move from stand-alone computers to a network.
As with any project, it’s prudent to start by defining the objectives and requirements of a network. Employees may require access to remote data, dial-in capabilities, or simple Internet connection. In this case, a peer-to-peer (p2p) network may suffice. However, some resource-intensive applications require more processing power, and a client/server networks should be considered. Knowing what an office needs helps to determine whether its current computer hardware will support a network, or if it’s time to upgrade.
Offices that are part of larger organizations should take into consideration existing hardware, software, and security standards. Standardization not only reduces support costs in the long run, but may also reduce overall equipment acquisition costs. This is good news for managers whose network ambitions are limited by the reality of budgetary constraints.
When planning a new network, future considerations, such as office growth and planned hiring, should be kept in mind. While an office’s driving force is today’s demands, the underlying consideration should always be tomorrow’s need.

Jeff, manager of a government office, and Christie, head of its IT department, are meeting to discuss their network problems:
J: As you know, our office deals with the public on a regular basis. But lately, we’ve received complaints. The turn-around time for serving people is too long, so we end up with huge lineups.
C: Where’s the bottleneck? Are the workstations too slow?
J: Well, our vintage hardware is part of the problem. But most of all, our computers are all stand-alone, so we have to call other departments to get info. Meanwhile, the customer is waiting and getting frustrated.
C: And the data you need is sitting in our central database. Hmm …. sounds like it’s time to set up a local network in this office and connect it to our government WAN. That way your staff can access the info themselves.
J: Great. When can we get cracking?
C: Slow down. First, we need to make sure your current equipment is up to the task, otherwise you’ll need to purchase new workstations. Of course, I’ll also need to install network cards in every computer.
J: I hope this is all within our budget.
C: Hey, I can only give you technical info. Better schedule your next meeting with the finance department!
