With heavy competition for jobs in the information technology (IT) market, many professionals are tuning to computer certifications in an effort to distinguish themselves from their peers. While such certifications may increase a prospective employee’s marketability, they are no substitute for hands-on experience.
Most certifications are tied to market demand. So, unlike university curricula, certification training focuses on the most up-to-date technologies. Certifications programs are offered by many IT training institutes, but many professionals complete their certification through self-study. Certifications generally focus on a specific vendor’s products, such as Microsoft or Novell. The value of these certifications is proportional to the vendor’s current and future market segments. Before any specific certification, it’s a good idea to check how marketable it will be in the near future.
Several years ago, companies would hire employees solely on the basis of paper certification. Having been stung in the past, companies are waking up to the realization that theoretical knowledge is no substitute for practical experience. These days, having a certification no longer guarantees a higher salary or larger bonus.
Computer certification is no guaranteed shortcut to job offers and financial rewards, but with the right experience, it can help you to get a foot in the door.

Jeff and Susan work for a hi-tech company and have just interviewed several candidates for a computer position:
J: Wow! I can’t believe the number of resumes we’ve received for the Network Administrator position that was advertised.
S: Yeah. It’s definitely an employer’s market. I wouldn’t want to be out looking for a job right now. We just can’t interview all of these applicants. We need to select only the best to meet with.
J: Maybe we should filter out the ones who don’t have any relevant experience. Paper certifications are good, but we can’t put our networks in the hands of a novice.
S: That still leaves us too many to interview …. You know, some of these applicants have computer certifications in addition to formal education.
J: The market is saturated with IT certified people already. How relevant a criteria do you figure certification is?
S: I don’t think certification is the be all and end all, but it does show these candidates have the initiative to learn new technologies and stay up-to-date.
J: At least, selecting certified professionals with experience to interview has given us a manageable pile of CVs. I suppose that leaves the cream of the crop.
S: Speaking of filtering and cream, I suddenly feel like a coffee!
