The Phantom of the Opera, the longest-running musical in Broadway history, took to the stage in Taiwan on July 10th. Upon hearing the name, apart from thinking of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s hit musical, one might also recall the 2004 film version of it, or one of the many earlier non-musical screen adaptations. This tragic story of music, obsession, and doomed love has enchanted millions of theater-and cinema-goers over the years. Unfortunately, few people nowadays are familiar with the source of it all, a French novel from 1911, and even fewer know of its author, Gaston Leroux.
The story of the writer is in some ways as tragic as the plot of the book. Growing up in Paris, Leroux had a keen interest in literature, but followed his father’s wishes and studied law. He spent only a small portion of his life practicing law, though, as a year after his father’s death, Leroux became a court reporter and a drama critic for a newspaper. Neither of these jobs brought him much satisfaction however, and he eventually devoted himself entirely to his true passion of writing fiction. Although he was an industrious writer, producing over 60 novels, he never found much success during his lifetime. Even “The Phantom of the Opera” sold poorly and met with much criticism when it first appeared. By the time the novel achieved tremendous fame, almost 75 years after it was published, Leroux was long gone, having died in 1927 at the age of 59.

The story of “The Phantom of the Opera” is essentially a tragic love triangle. The performers of an opera house believe it is haunted by a phantom who is, in reality, an opera singer with a horribly deformed face which he hides behind a mask. Known as the Phantom, he lives in a lair beneath the opera house, where he spends his days and nights composing music that only he gets to hear. When he encounters a beautiful singer named Christine, however, he breaks his isolation to become her singing tutor, and soon falls in love with her. Under the Phantom’s guidance, Christine becomes a star. But when the Phantom learns of her engagement to Raoul, her childhood sweetheart, he is filled with jealous rage and seeks revenge on the couple.
At the story’s climax, the Phantom kidnaps Christine in desperation, as he cannot bear to see her wed to another man. When he threatens to kill Raoul, Christine, to save her beloved, offers to stay with the Phantom and kisses him. Moved by the power of true human love which he has never felt before, the Phantom shows mercy and releases them both. In the end, the heartbroken Phantom vanishes forever, leaving behind only his cape and mask.
The universal quality of this story of the tragic and redemptive powers of love is no doubt part of the reason for “The Phantom of the Opera’s” success in print, on screen, and on stage.

Regardless of the format in which it is told, the story of “The Phantom of the Opera” owes much of its appeal to the Phantom himself. This mysterious character, a figure who generates feelings of both fear and sympathy, has fascinated audiences across generations and cultures. While the Phantom is horrifying in appearance and menacing because of his secrecy and power, he is also a misunderstood musical genius and the victim of a hopeless love. These qualities are what keep him from becoming a simple villain.
Such a powerful and memorable central character is certainly one reason for the phenomenal success of the musical version of “The Phantom of the Opera” by Andrew Lloyd Webber. First performed in London in 1986, it starred Michael Crawford as the Phantom and Lloyd Webber’s then-wife, Sara Brightman, as Christine. It went on to become the second-longest-running musical in West End history, celebrating its 9,000th performance in May 2008, and the longest-running Broadway musical, surpassing Lloyd Webber’s own “Cats.”
In Lloyd Webber’s musical version of “The Phantom of the Opera,” complex characters, along with exciting music and spectacular staging, have won the hearts of audiences around the world. In the tragic character of the Phantom, they can recognize their own deepest longings, fears, and desires.
