Narnia holds a place in the heart of any child who has turned the well-worn pages of C.S. Lewis’s beloved books and joined Peter, Susan, Edmund, and Lucy as they journey to the magical land. Fans of The Chronicles of Narnia probably have enjoyed the film adaptations of the stories, and The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, released in Taiwan on December 24th, will certainly captivate these loyal readers again.

On November 29th, 1898, Albert and Flora Lewis welcomed their son Clive Staples into the world. The boy, who liked to be called Jack, and his brother Warren had a happy childhood, spending many an hour exploring the disordered gardens and dark corridors of their Belfast family home. Lewis took advantage of his father’s vast library, later noting how he could be as sure of finding a new book to read as “finding a new blade of grass” when walking in a field.

Lewis’s carefree boyhood ended in 1908 with the untimely death of his mother. From then on, he spent the majority of his schooldays at boarding school in England. He became passionate about poetry and went on to study at Oxford University. With first-class honors in Greek and Latin Literature, Philosophy and Ancient History, and English Literature, it’s little surprise Oxford asked him to stay on as a professor.

C.S. Lewis began his career in academia, and he also began to publish books. With his broad spectrum of knowledge and wide interests, he wrote scholarly works, popular novels, and discussions of Christianity. His Allegory of Love (1936) discusses love literature from the Middle Ages through to Shakespeare, and is still regarded as a masterpiece.

When Lewis decided he wanted to write children’s literature, he was met with skepticism, and his publisher and friends, not wanting his reputation to be damaged, tried to talk him out of it. Lewis went ahead anyway. He’d gotten the idea for The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe about ten years before he began writing it. It came to him in 1939, when child evacuees were staying with Lewis to escape the bombings during WWII. A little evacuee was entranced by one of the house’s wardrobes, and said that he imagined there was another way out of it, around the other side. Thus, Narnia was born.

Narnia is a magical parallel universe to which the four children gain access. There, they meet dwarves, talking animals, mythological creatures, Aslan the lion, and the wicked White Witch. The Chronicles of Narnia consists of seven novels which follow the adventures of the children and Narnia’s unforgettable characters. The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, the first book in series, was published in 1950. Reviewers were not crazy about the tale, and even Lewis’s good friend, J.R.R. Tolkien, had strong criticism of the wild assortment of characters. But word of mouth was enough to help the story gain popularity with the public, and Lewis swiftly went on to complete the set of books, publishing the final one, The Last Battle, in 1956.

Since then, over 120 million Narnia books have been sold, placing C.S. Lewis permanently amongst the most beloved children’s authors of all time. The classic stories now occupy a place on the bookshelves of children all around the world.

Lewis’s enthusiasm for Greek and Roman mythology, traditional fairy tales, Irish and Germanic folklore, and medieval literature is evident, and pervades Narnia. Alongside this, many people also believe religion is also a key element in these stories.

Christian messages are the most controversial aspect of the chronicles. Of those who do see Christian allegory – Aslan as a Jesus Christ figure who is sacrificed and rises from the dead – there are some who have no problem with it, others who praise it, and still others who object that Lewis is, distastefully, forcing his faith on children. On the other hand, there are Christians themselves who are offended by the representation of Jesus as a talking lion, and attack the pagan themes they see in the stories. Lewis commented that he did not originally set out to incorporate Christianity into the Narnia chronicles.

Whatever your religious interpretation of Lewis’s work, there is still far more to the stories. The beautiful, magical world of Narnia captures the imaginations of children and in many ways, is quite simply just a tale of good against evil.

The recent movies have, for many people, brought back fond memories of reading C.S. Lewis’s storytelling. And for those who have never entered the world of Narnia, or feel they are too old to read the books now, don’t fret. “Someday you will be old enough to start reading fairy tales again,” wrote Lewis, and what better place to start than Narnia.
