A dog-eared copy of the Ink trilogy should be sitting on the bookshelf of every self-respecting fan of young adult fantasy literature. The magical adventures of 12-year-old Meggie Folchart weave in and out of fantasy, reality, and fiction, gripping the reader from the first page to the last.

Cornelia Funke, author of the trilogy, The Thief Lord, Dragon Rider, and a host of other children’s novels, was born in Dorsten, Germany in 1958. Although her childhood dream of becoming an astronaut was never to transpire, her life would still take her on a journey out of this world. Having studied pedagogy at the University of Hamburg, Funke moved into the field of social work. For three years, she worked with the city’s deprived children who, she says, have been her inspiration ever since.

After a brief stint working as an illustrator, Funke made a name for herself in her homeland when she wrote the Ghosthunters and Wild Chicks fantasy series. It wasn’t until 2002, when The Thief Lord was translated into English, that Funke’s fame began to spread. The book rose to the number two spot on The New York Times’ best seller list.

Still her success did not end there, and the Ink trilogy – Inkheart (2003), Inkspell (2005), and Inkdeath (2008) –secured her worldwide recognition. Her latest work, Reckless, was released in 2010 and has also proved immensely popular with her fans.

Inkheart is the story of Meggie and her father Mortimer, or Mo. Mo has an extraordinary ability: whenever he reads aloud, the characters and objects he narrates appear in the real world. Of course, this is just as much a gift as a curse.

We learn that when Meggie was three, her mother disappeared when her father read to her from a book named “Inkheart.” Her mother and two cats were dragged into the world of the novel, an exchanged for three of the book’s protagonists who are still roaming the real world. Now, though, two of these fictitious characters, Basta and Capricorn, come in search of Mo and kidnap him. They want him to read the monster Shadow from “Inkheart” out of the book as part of a plan to make them more powerful. But Mo wants to fetch his wife from the fictional world, not an evil monster. With only one copy of “Inkheart” in existence, they turn to Fenoglio, its author, for help.

Reckless is a similarly magical tale. For years, Jacob Reckless has been secretly visiting Mirrorland, an enchanting but dangerous land of fairies, witches, dwarfs, and fantastical creatures. It all goes wrong, though, when Jacob’s little brother Will follows him and is turned to stone by the Dark Fairy, and Jacob is the only one who can save him.

You don’t have to have read Funke’s writing to be able to imagine how vivid her characters are. She says herself that sometimes she has ideas for characters who are so alive that “they step into her writing room.” Her own love of fantasy fiction and her artistic skills seem to combine in a way that makes it easy for Funke to bring magical creatures to life.

你不必真的读过冯克的书就能想象她笔下的角色是多么活灵活现。冯克说，有时她脑中冒出的新角色是如此栩栩如生，彷佛就这么走进她的书房。冯克对奇幻小说的热爱与艺术技巧相结合，使得冯克可以轻易让魔法生物跃然纸上。

Funke is not an author who struggles for inspiration. She has countless ideas for stories, heroes, heroines, and villains. But, of course, not all of them are very good! When Funke is struck by a good idea, though, she begins to ask questions and works to expand on it. Her inspiration for the Ink trilogy, for instance, came from a picture she had in her head of a girl sitting in bed while a figure stood outside in the rain.

And as with any fairy story worth its salt, there’s far more to Funke’s mystical books than sweetness and light. Sinister undertones and quite unpleasant bad guys ensure the reader will be at once enchanted and enthralled, thrilled and chilled.
