Andrew Warhola, better known as Andy Warhol, was one of the most important figures in the Pop Art movement. Sick and bedridden for much of his childhood, Warhol found himself isolated from other children and turned to drawing and coloring. He would often spend time listening to the radio or collecting pictures of movie stars.

After studying commercial art at Carnegie Mellon University, Warhol moved to New York City, where he worked as an illustrator for magazines such as Vogue and Glamour throughout the 1950s. However, it was not until 1962, thanks to his solo show at New York’s Stable Gallery, that he became famous – literally overnight. Among the paintings exhibited at the show, “Baseball,” in what would become his signature style, featured a black-and-white newspaper photograph of the New York Yankees superstar Roger Maris transferred onto a silkscreen.

Warhol then founded his studio, The Factory, in 1963, and worked there twelve hours a day. Inspired by his fascination with commercial pop culture, he used silkscreen to reduce his role in the art process, thus making it possible to mass-produce images of mass market items. His most famous paintings, which are nothing more than repetitive images of cans of tomato-flavored Campbell’s soup, have become symbols of the Pop Art movement.

The Factory became a regular haunt for both the glamorous and the rather eccentric characters from the art world. Warhol himself was often seen bizarrely dressed in black sunglasses, a blonde wig, a black leather jacket, and high-heeled boots. A regular guest at parties, he was a star of New York’s social scene. However, his celebrity status almost cost him his life in 1968 when an obsessed fan shot him at The Factory. Warhol spent two months in the hospital. As a consequence, the next decade was a much quieter one for Warhol, who, in terms of work, focused mainly on portraits of celebrities, such as John Lennon, Michael Jackson, and even Chinese Communist leader Mao Zedong.

Warhol passed away in 1987 after complications from gall bladder surgery. Two thousand friends and adoring fans attended the funeral. In 1994, in remembrance of him, the largest art museum dedicated to a single artist, the Andy Warhol Museum, was built in Pittsburgh, the town of his birth. The icon of Pop might be gone, but his colorful legacy lives on in the unconventional images he left behind.
